Planning Your Dog Friendly Vacations on Hatteras Island
Bringing your dog along for the adventure isn’t just possible on Hatteras Island, it’s part of what makes this stretch of the Outer Banks so special. From wide, pet-friendly beaches to local restaurants with shaded patios and bowls of water waiting out front, Hatteras Island delivers one of the most relaxed, rewarding dog friendly vacation destinations on the East Coast.
If you're planning a dog-friendly getaway, you’ll find our small coastal towns are filled with trails, parks, historic sites, and local businesses that welcome leashed dogs with open arms. At Brindley Beach, we offer a wide range of pet-friendly accommodations so your entire pack can relax and enjoy the island together.
Dog-Friendly Beaches on Hatteras Island
Unlike some OBX towns that place restrictions on dogs during the summer, every beach on Hatteras Island is dog-friendly year-round. That’s because the island is part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, where leashed dogs are welcome on the sand as long as they’re not on designated swim beaches. All dogs must be leashed (six feet or shorter), and you’re responsible for picking up after them.
Not sure where to go? Here are a few local favorites that dog owners love:
- Canadian Hole – Popular for families with dogs who prefer calm, soundside waters. Great for a sunset walk or a splash without heavy surf.
- Frisco Beach – Lifeguarded in-season and popular with both locals and visitors. A good pick if your group wants to relax while still feeling close to amenities.
- Salvo Beach – Quiet and uncrowded with steep dunes and wide sand. Perfect for dogs (and humans) who enjoy a more private, natural environment.

Dog-Friendly Trails, Parks & Sites
Cape Hatteras Lighthouse Grounds
You can’t take your dog inside, but the scenic grounds of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse are ideal for a shaded morning walk. Leashed dogs are welcome throughout the site, and there’s plenty of grassy space and picnic areas nearby.
Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station Historic Site
Located in Rodanthe, this preserved station is one of the oldest of its kind on the East Coast. Leashed dogs are welcome to explore the grounds alongside you.
Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
This national park is a haven for birders, wildlife watchers, and nature-loving pups. Enjoy dog friendly trails and walking paths that follow the marshes and offer sound views. Dogs must remain leashed and on designated paths.

Dog Safety at the Beach
A trip to the beach can be just as refreshing for your pup as it is for you—if you take the right precautions.
- Check the sand temperature: If it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
- Bring fresh water and a collapsible bowl to keep them hydrated.
- Find or create shaded space using an umbrella or pop-up tent.
- Pack food or snacks if you'll be out for long stretches. You can even throw in a few ice packs for your pup to lie on.
- Use dog-safe sunscreen: If your dog has light skin or a thin coat, they’re vulnerable to sunburn. Apply sunscreen made specifically for pets to exposed areas like the nose, ears, and belly.
