Dog-Friendly Beaches on Hatteras Island

Unlike some OBX towns that place restrictions on dogs during the summer, every beach on Hatteras Island is dog-friendly year-round. That’s because the island is part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, where leashed dogs are welcome on the sand as long as they’re not on designated swim beaches. All dogs must be leashed (six feet or shorter), and you’re responsible for picking up after them.

Dog Safety at the Beach

A trip to the beach can be just as refreshing for your pup as it is for you—if you take the right precautions.

• Check the sand temperature: If it’s too hot for your bare feet, it’s too hot for your dog’s paws.
• Bring fresh water and a collapsible bowl to keep them hydrated.
• Find or create shaded space using an umbrella or pop-up tent.
• Pack food or snacks if you'll be out for long stretches. You can even throw in a few ice packs for your pup to lie on.
• Use dog-safe sunscreen: If your dog has light skin or a thin coat, they’re vulnerable to sunburn. Apply sunscreen made specifically for pets to exposed areas like the nose, ears, and belly.
